Father’s Day is a very special day and a great time to celebrate fathers and father figures around the world. This article is filled with dads in history who have had close relationships with their son or daughter. These fathers showed their love and affection in different ways but all had one thing in common: they were great fathers. Below you will find some historical father figures:

Charlemagne

Here is an example of a merciful dad in history. Charlemagne, king of the Franks and emperor of the romans had a total of 20 children. Charlemagne found out his son, Pepin the Hunchback, was plotting to assassinate him. The emperor changed his sentence and only sent him to a monastery.

Czar Nicholas II

Czar Nicholas II, the last Russian emperor, had five children of his own. His only son, Alix of Hesse, and only heir of the empire, was diagnosed with hemophilia. Nicholas decided to look out to Rasputin the healer. In his brave efforts he compromised the eve of the Russian revolution.

Mark Twain

The relationship between Mark Twain and his daughter, Susy, was quite lovely. They always had a very strong bond and this was even shown through his writing. Mark created two major characters in his novels in honor of his daughter. Once she passes away at a young age he fell into a deep depression. He then decided to include some of her literary work in his own autobiography.

Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman politician and lawyer, was one of Rome’s greatest orators and prose stylists. He had great love for his daughter Tullia. After her death he almost became inconsolable. There were attempts from his friends to help him overcome grief, and his own search to overcome these feelings. He was almost never the same and even divorced his wife because she did not show as much grief as he did.

Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist, biologist, and father of modern evolutionary science. He was the father of 10 children, whom he cared for as much as the mother. When his young daughter Annie passed away he was so devastated that it is believed he lost his religious faith because of this.
